CASEY, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Nearly 3,000 piglets have been rounded up following an accident that occurred Friday morning in between Greenup and Casey.
According to a press release from the Illinois State Police, the accident occurred on I-70 at milepost 127 shortly after 7:00am.
The report states that the driver of a livestock hauler was ill and the vehicle left the roadway.
The semi then overturned.
Nearly 3,000 piglets became loose.
Approximately 100 pigs perished in the incident.
The remaining pigs were reloaded with the efforts of the Greenup Fire Department, Greenup Police Department, Casey Police Department, Illinois Department of Transportation, IDOT Portable Scales, Effingham Equity, and other local volunteers.
The pigs then continued to their destination in Indiana.
The driver of the semi was cited for improper lane usage.
The Illinois State Police press release stated, “We experienced a great community effort out there today and for that we are thankful and proud.”
