EFFINGHAM, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Effingham Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at Quad Graphics, 1200 Niccum Ave, at 3:28pm on Saturday.
According to a press released from the Effingham Fire Department, crews arrived on scene and the evacuated employees and management report that the fire was on the north side of building in the scrap room.
Smoke was then reported in the first floor shredder and baler room and in the 2nd floor cyclone and bag room.
As Assistant Chief Kulesza arrived on scene and took command, it was reported that there was a fire in the exhaust system.
Kulesza called for a full-still, pulling additional Effingham Crews and Teutopolis Fire Crews to the scene.
Watson and Shumway Fire Crews were then called to help after it was reported that conditions were getting worse on the 2nd floor and that multiple industrial units in that area needed taken apart to access the fire.
The origin of the fire was determined to be an industrial paper shredder that overheated/malfunctioned on the first floor, sending sparks into the vacuum system and into the 2nd floor cyclone systems.
Quad Graphics maintenance personnel worked with fire crews on disassembling the machines.
Thirty-three firefighters were on-scene and approximately 11,000 gallons of water was used.
No injuries were reported and the equipment suffered minimal damage and no structural damage.
Fire crews cleared the scene at 8:32pm.
