Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Discussion over Oxford House programs drew passionate responses at Tuesday night’s Effingham City Council meeting. Oxford House provides shared housing for individuals working to recover from drug and alcohol addiction.
Two houses operate locally—one on Virginia Avenue and a second, newer location on North Glenwood Street—without direct city approval. City Attorney Tracy Willenborg clarified the city is still negotiating on the issue. Several residents argued against these houses in their neighborhoods, expressing concerns about safety and property values. Supporters shared stories of recovery and stated the homes offer vital structure and encouragement. Mayor Mike Schutzbach recently met with concerned neighbors, and officials underscored that no immediate decisions will be made.
Council members aim for a thorough review before moving forward.
Additionally, a public hearing is set for next Tuesday regarding Effingham’s 2050 Comprehensive Plan.
