Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Effingham County Board met for their regular meeting Monday and started the meeting a bit differently than usual.
In response to heightened tensions after Charlie Kirk’s shooting, Monday’s Effingham County Board meeting focused on civility. Departing from tradition, Chairman Josh Douthit forwent the usual prayer, instead urging attendees to pray for thoughtfulness in their words. Sandi Rich called on board members to foster “civility, not hostility.”
Addressing confusion over tax payments, Treasurer Deb Ruholl explained that while residents may deposit tax bills on time, delayed postmarks could impact compliance with state law, which requires timely postmarks. Over $44 million in taxes have been collected, with distributions expected in October.
The Board reconsidered a previously approved hotel/motel tax fund guideline, tabling the measure for more committee review until after the budget is finalized, as advised by Mike Buzzard. October 6–12 was proclaimed National 4-H Week, with the entire month declared National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Ongoing efforts include seeking veteran group contributions for a County Government Center flagpole, allocating $15,000 to the Effingham Regional Growth Alliance, and supporting the Ham City Fall Fest with $1,000.
Larry Taylor and Jim Westendorf were also reappointed to advisory boards.
