Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- City Council members congratulated Tom Webb as he was officially sworn in as Deputy Police Chief. Webb, an Effingham native, has steadily advanced through the department’s ranks since joining as a patrolman. His wife, Heather, had the honor of pinning on his new insignias during the ceremony, joined by their children.
Effingham City Council members considered significant adjustments to the city’s tax structure during Tuesday’s meeting. Members discussed introducing a 1% sales tax that could bring in approximately $6.5 million each year, while exempting groceries, medicine, and titled vehicles. Options on the table include a separate 1% grocery tax, potentially replacing the expiring state grocery tax, and eliminating the city’s amusement tax, which currently raises about $165,000 annually. No decisions have been finalized, but the Council aims to settle on a plan by September, hoping to implement changes by January.
Effingham residents are encouraged to share feedback as the Council debates next steps.
Council members also addressed a longstanding petition to vacate an unused section of Glenwood Street. Officials agreed city staff will consult with residents and property owners to develop a recommendation. Progress also continues on the Effingham 2050 Comprehensive Plan.
