On June 28th 2025 at approximately 5:10 P.M. Jasper County 911 Dispatch received a call of the possible drowning of multiple individuals in the Embarras River Northwest of Ste. Marie. Jasper County First Responders responded to the scene and began searching for the individuals. The bodies of 3 individuals were recovered from the water.
Jasper County Coroner Jason Meyer said the victims were:
- 39 year old Travis Lee Keebler
- 12 year old Adelyn Re’nee-lee Keebler
- Six year old Noah Joseph-Edgar Lee Keebler
Emergency Services cleared from the scene at approximately 11:37 P.M.

The Jasper County School District Superintendent Joe Sornberger released a statement about the tragedy:
“It is with deep sadness that I inform you about a tragic accident that has resulted in a significant loss in our schools and in our community. On June 28, 2025, two students died in an accident on the river.
Our district is committed to doing everything we can to help our students and staff with the grieving and healing process. To that end, we have counselors available at Newton Elementary School today, Monday, June 30th from 2:00-6:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, July 1st from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.”
