Mattoon, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Lake Land College TRIO Destination College program recently hosted students from Mattoon Middle School for a one-day STEM camp.
During the event, TRIO Destination College Advisors Tara Schaljo and Codi Julius led the students through interactive activities and campus-wide exploration. The event was designed to introduce students to careers in science, technology, engineering and math and demonstrate the opportunities available in these fields with higher education.
The event included a scavenger hunt activity that allowed students to visit a wide range of resources and programs across campus. Students worked in pairs to solve clues that led them to various departments, including the Financial Aid, Student Life and Counseling Offices as well as the Broadcast Communication facilities and EMS ambulance simulator.
The students also visited Lake Land’s Manufacturing Skill Lab, a facility equipped with state-of-the art machinery and workplace training tools. There, the students engaged in hands-on activities to learn about the technology behind robotics, welding, electronics and more.
The Mattoon Middle School STEM camp is one of many initiatives led by the TRIO Destination College program at Lake Land College to empower students to pursue and succeed in higher education.
