Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Severe weather is once again in the forecast for today.
The National Weather Service in St. Louis says in their latest weather briefing that several waves of severe thunderstorms are expected today from late morning into early evening. Locally heavy rainfall and flash flooding is possible. The NWS adds there is still uncertainty in the forecast, both in timing and strength of thunderstorms. They add that despite the uncertainty, high-impact severe weather is very possible across the area. That includes the potential for hail in excess of 2 inches in diameter, wind gusts in excess of 70 miles per hour, and strong tornadoes.
As for timing, the latest map shows the time of the earliest thunderstorm development for our area to be between 1 pm and 4 pm today. The NWS says that there is potential for “significant” or “destructive” thunderstorms, and that the conditions will be favorable for significant severe weather along and south of the I-70 corridor in Missouri and Illinois this afternoon.
Prepare for severe storms ahead of time and be ready to take shelter if storms approach. We will post updates on the storms on our website and Facebook pages as they come in.
