Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Beecher City Jr/Sr High School had a special drill that was run through today: a simulated car crash with injuries. This drill was done to show what drinking and driving can lead to in a worst-case scenario.
Multiple agencies participated in the drill, including Police Officers, EMT’s, ambulance personnel, and firefighters. The crash scene was set up with people in the cars to simulate a real accident. Air Evac helicopters also participated in the drill.
Beecher City students saw what a crash scene looks like from the moment emergency personnel would arrive on scene. They saw first hand how many people are involved in a two car crash, with multiple injuries and fatalities.
Crash victims, who were dressed up with makeup to look injured from the crash drill, were put on stretchers, taken to the Air Evac, and loaded into the back of an ambulance. One was taken away in a body bag to simulate a death at the scene, taken away in the coroner’s vehicle. Effingham County Coroner Kim Rhodes was in attendance.
The drill also included parents trying to see their loved ones, attempting to elude emergency personnel to get to their kids involved in the mock crash.
The idea of this drill is to show the students just how much goes into a crash scene, how many people are involved, and how deadly it can be. After the drill, some officers and emergency personnel gave speeches in the gymnasium explaining some of the horrors they have seen, and emphasized the dangers of DUI/distracted driving.
The 30-minute mock crash scene was a stark reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence, or driving distracted. The speakers emphasized that a simple call to a loved one, or a sober friend, can save not only your own life, but your friends’ lives too. The message was simple: don’t drink and drive. It’s not worth the risk.
