On Thursday night the Altamont Lady Indians were victorious 39-29 over Salt Fork in the Class 1A Central A & M Sectional Championship. Altamont captured their second sectional title in school history and first in 43 years.
It was a low scoring defensive battle for the entire game. Salt Fork was only allowing 28 points a game coming in and Altamont playing their best defense here in the postseason. Points were hard to come by.
As the duo of Grace Nelson and Kylie Osteen scored the only four points for Altamont in the opening quarter. While the Storm had points from Macie Russell and Brycie Hird. The first ended in a 4-4 tie.
The Indians would find their grove in the second with more points coming from Nelson and Kylie Osteen. While Salt Fork stayed within striking distance with a bucket and free throws from Russell. Salt Fork crashed the offensive glass in the first half and out rebounding Altamont but the Lady Indians had a 12-10 lead at the half.
Russell continued her great night, pouring in six to start the third quarter. Taylor Remole made a three to put Salt Fork in front. But the Indians quickly responded with a Skylie Klein three of her own to take the lead back.
Nelson would score five in the quarter and with her last basket gave Altamont the 22-19 lead after three.
In the final quarter, Salt Fork all state standout Junior Alexa Jamison finally scored her first basket of the game. Jamison finished threw contact and converted the three point play.
Another three by Remole kept the Storm in it but it was Nelson and the Lady Indians eventually pulling away.
Kaylee Lurkins would come up huge on the boards and would get four points on a couple of put back opportunities. Nelson would pour in 11 in the quarter and go seven of eight from the line to close it out for Altamont.
Salt Fork closes out their year 28-6 overall.
Lady Indians improve to 26-6 on the season and advance to the Super Sectionals for the first time since 1981.
The Tribe will square off against Cissna Park, who came out on the winning side of a double overtime thriller 43-42 over Gibson City Melvin Sibley. The Super Sectional will take place in Farmer City at Blue Ridge High School. Tip off is Monday and scheduled for 7:00 P.M.
