Effingham traveled to Mahomet on Friday night to take on Mahomet Seymour. The Hearts well, left all their points at home. Possibly could have saved some of those points they scored last week against Taylorville. It was Mahomet who scored all the points on this night, their senior night winning 47-0.
The Bulldogs started the scoring quickly just 49 seconds into the game when QB Lucas Dyer passed it to Braden Pagel on screen pass to take it in from 68 yards. That score put Mahomet on top 7-0.
From there both offenses had trouble getting anything going, dealing with some lees than ideal conditions for passing the football with the wind. Both teams combined for seven straight punts or turnover on downs.
Two of those possessions for Effingham, QB Gaige Gillum found some openings keeping the ball on option plays. The Hearts would take advantage of good field position getting it down to the 11 yard line both times. Only for both of those drives to stall out and ultimately lead to turning the ball on downs
Mahomet did finally break thru and take advantage of some momentary calm winds. Dyer would hit a 65 yard deep pass down the sideline to Trey Peters, to set up a 11 yard touchdown run from Luke Johnson to make it 14-0. Effingham’s Wade Bushur picked off a Mahomet pass in the endzone to prevent another Bulldog score. But time was winding down in the half and the Hearts ran out of time to hold the score 14-0 at halftime.
In the third quarter Mahomet would blow the scoreboard and the game wide open, scoring on their first four possessions of the second half. Dyer would throw touchdowns to Raymound Long and a pair to Peters. Mahomet would also take advantage of a Hearts interception that would turn into six points. A 60 yard end around run by Braden Pagel. The score was 35-0 after three quarter.
Mahomet would add one final score from Ryken Kirby to make the final score 47-0.
The Hearts drop to 3-4 on the season and 2-2 in the Apollo. Effingham returns home for a senior night of their own next week against Mt. Zion.
Mahomet Seymour improves to 6-1 on the season and 4-0 in the Apollo conference. The Bulldogs are one win away next week against Mattoon, of clinching their third straight Apollo Championship.
