Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The summer heat has arrived.
Hot weather will continue in central Illinois until Saturday when a cold front brings some relief. Daily highs will reach the upper 90s through Friday, with heat index around 110. Northern portions of the area, including Galesburg, Peoria, and Bloomington should see high temperatures decrease to around 90 by Saturday, while another day of highs in the mid to upper 90s is in store for areas to the south.
An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for the entire area through Friday.

Practice Heat Safety wherever you are. Job Sites: stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade as often as possible. Indoors: Check up on the elderly, sick and those without AC. Vehicles: Never leave kids or pets unattended – LOOK before you LOCK. Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade, and stay hydrated. Heat-related deaths are preventable. Protect yourself and others from the impacts of heat waves.
Heat Exhaustion vs Heat Stroke:
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating, nausea, and weakness. Act fast by moving to a cooler area, loosening clothing, sipping cool water. Seek medical help if symptoms don’t improve. Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke. Symptoms of heat stroke include confusion, dizziness, and becoming unconscious. Act fast by calling 911, moving the person to a cooler area, loosening clothing and removing extra layers, and cooling with water or ice. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given.
Occasional chances for thunderstorms will take place, most notably Friday night into Saturday when some of these storms could be severe with hail and locally damaging winds.
Highs should be in the upper 80s for Sunday, as a cold front moves through and brings some much needed relief.
