Altamont traveled 80 miles, an hour and half one way for four days straight, and it was all worth it as the Indians return home with a holiday tournament championship. As Altamont coming is as the 2 seed took down the 5 seed Goreville 57-40.
Both teams were slow out of the gate and it took a couple minutes before either one scored. Keinon Eirhart finally broke through for Altamont making a free throw to open the scoring. Then Wyatt Phillips hit a three pointer as the Indians jumped out to the early 6-2 lead. The lead would eventually get up to 12-4 as the Indians defense really hampered what the Blackcats wanted to do offensively. A couple of threes from Phillips and Avery Jahraus got the Altamont lead up to 13-7 after the opening quarter.
Altamont would continue to have force some first half turnovers while limiting their own, getting run outs on fast breaks off of misses. Rebounding would be in the Indians favor particularly on the offensive end. As Logan Cornett poured in four in the quarter and Eirhart, Eric Kollmann and Kaidyn Miller all had put back buckets got extend the Altamont lead 26-17 at the half.
Drake Moss for Goreville tried to help the Blackcats mount a comeback, by pouring in seven in the early stages of the third quarter. But it was Cornett with six more in the quarter to give him double digits on the night. Jahraus’s second three of the night would increase the lead again to 43-30 after three.
Altamont would finish off the game in the final quarter with seven put in from Phillips and Altamont would go on to lead wire to wire and win their first Sesser Tournament title in three tries.
Altamont improves to 10-3 on the season riding a five game winning streak into 2023. The Indians return to action in the new year back at home against Shelbyville on January 3rd.
Goreville falls to 9-4 on the season.
