Champaign County, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Following Preliminary Information is Being Released by Illinois State Police District 10:
WHAT:
- Two Vehicle Fatal Traffic Crash
WHERE:
- Interstate 57 northbound, just north of Milepost 236, Champaign, Champaign County
WHEN:
- November 3, 2022 at 4:45 a.m.
VEHICLES:
- Unit 1 – 2008 Chevrolet Express Box Truck
- Unit 2 – 2023 Freightliner Truck Tractor Semi-Trailer
DRIVERS:
- Unit 1 – Cesar Meraz, 23-year-old male from Cicero, IL – Transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
- Unit 2 – Kenneth R. Johnson, a 78-year-old male of Decatur, IL – Refused medical attention
PASSENGER:
- Unit 1 – A 23-year-old male from Cicero, IL – Deceased
PRELIMINARY:
- A preliminary investigation indicates the following occurred: Unit 2 was traveling northbound on Interstate 57, just north of Milepost 236. Unit 1 was behind Unit 2, traveling the same direction. Unit 1 struck the rear of Unit 2. Unit 1 then lost control and overturned into the median. Unit 1 came to rest on the passenger’s side. The passenger of Unit 1 was fatally injured. The driver of Unit 1 was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of Unit 2 refused medical attention. The northbound lanes were re-opened at approximately 11:15 a.m. No further information is available.
CHARGES:
- Driver of Unit 1 was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Crash
All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
