Effingham traveled to Mattoon on Friday night and returned home with the 28-0 shutout victory over the Mattoon Green Wave.
Mattoon got the ball on the opening kick and had a clock eating drive only to come up short. Because of penalty negating a first down run, the Green Wave would have to punt it away. Effingham’s offense didn’t fair too much better has they had little going for them and the first quarter finished scoreless.
Early in the second quarter the Hearts would get the passing game going. With connections from QB Nate Thompson and Parker Wolfe. Thompson would connect with Wolfe on a 20 yard TD pass to get Effingham on the board first 7-0. Wolfe would have another big catch and run to set up the Hearts second score of the game. RB Chase Woomer punched it in from 7 yards out to make it 14-0.
Effingham would take advantage of some Mattoon turnovers in the second half. Effingham would score just before the third quarter end on a would be INT. A Mattoon defender tipped a Thompson pass right in the waiting hands of Holden Lewis for a 9 yard TD catch to put Effingham up 21-0.
Effingham would add one more TD and it was Lewis second TD catch of the night this time from a little further out. It was a 44 yard catch and run into the endzone for the final score of the night.
Wolfe would intercept a Jackson Spurgeon pass late in the game to seal the 28-0 win.
Effingham is now 3-0 on the season and Mattoon drops to 1-2 on the season.
Effingham is back at Klosterman Field next Friday against Taylorville.
