Springfield, IL -(Effingham Radio)- Four Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) students attending colleges in central Illinois and the Chicago area have each been awarded $500 by the Illinois Veterinary Medical Foundation (IVMF) for the 2020-2021 collegiate academic year.
The scholarships are awarded on an annual basis by the Foundation to provide tuition assistance towards veterinary medicine education for eligible college students. Awardees are student members of the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association (ISVMA) and can apply every year in efforts to compete for financial scholarships to assist with costs associated with higher education tuition when enrolled in CVT courses. This year’s awardees are:
- Kyra Carlisle, Normal, attending the Veterinary Technology Program at Parkland College in Champaign;
- Archer Curry, Elburn, attending the Veterinary Medical Technology Program at Joliet Junior College in Joliet;
- Malory Moon, Macomb, attending the Veterinary Technology Program at Black Hawk College in Galva; and
- Jessica Spreadbury, Oak Forest, attending the Vet Tech Institute at Fox College in Tinley Park.
“There were a total of nine qualified applicants requesting scholarship assistance from the ISVMA Foundation this year,” says Tracy Myers, DVM, President of the IVMF board of directors. “Each application is reviewed carefully by the board, which includes not only the application but also an essay about why the student is passionate about helping animals and why he or she chose this profession to study. It’s a wonderful way to learn about who our next generation of CVTs will be in Illinois. We’re so very proud to provide assistance as they learn the craft.”

At the direction of a veterinarian, CVTs coach and inform pet owners about their animal’s care, perform laboratory testing, take radiographs, provide nursing care to animal patients, administer medications and can assist with anesthesia and the veterinarian during surgery.
