Cicero, IL -(Effingham Radio)- An Illinois woman is admitting to keeping dozens of Guatemalan people in her basement and forcing them to work.
Concepcion Malinek pleaded guilty yesterday to forced labor. She admitted that she helped several people enter the United States between 2009 and 2014, only to charge them fees and demand payment while threatening to have them deported. Prosecutors say Malinek forced most of the immigrants to live in her basement and arranged for them to work at a factory.
Authorities found 33 people living at her home at the time of her arrest last year. Malinek faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.
