Effingham, IL -(Effingham Radio)- HSHS Home Care and Hospice Southern Illinois is celebrating November 2019 as National Home Care and Hospice Month. During the month of November, the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC) celebrates National Home Care Month, National Hospice Month and Home Care Aide Week. During this month, HSHS Home Care and Hospice Southern Illinois is celebrating the home care and hospice community, and honoring the millions of nurses, home care aides, therapists and social workers who make a remarkable difference for the patients and families they serve. These heroic caregivers play a central role in the health care system and in homes across the nation.
Shawna O’Dell, RN, director of HSHS Home Care and Hospice Southern Illinois, shared “Home care provides high quality, compassionate and skilled health care services to those in need, especially at times of community or personal health care crisis. Additionally, hospice and supportive care empower people to live as fully as possible, surrounded and supported by family and loved ones, despite serious and life-limiting illness,” she explained.
Home care and hospice services are a collaboration with sister hospitals HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon, HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese, HSHS Holy Family Hospital in Greenville and HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland, to provide home health services to an expanded region across the Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) Southern Illinois Division service area. HSHS Home Care and Hospice Southern Illinois serve the communities of 27 counties south-central Illinois region, nearly one-third of the State of Illinois.
The focus of HSHS Home Care and Hospice is on the health needs of the individual in a family setting, allowing the patients to attain and maintain their highest level of independent living, dignity and comfort. HSHS Home Care and Hospice caregivers collaborate with the patient’s family and their physician to provide skilled nursing and therapies, manage pain, coordinate medications, and address their spiritual and emotional needs.
“By celebrating November as National Home Care and Hospice Month, we are encouraging the support and participation of all citizens in learning more about home care concepts of care for the elderly, disabled and infirm, as well as increase their understanding and awareness of care at the end of life,” O’Dell said. “This month also gives us the opportunity to appreciate our more than 160 dedicated, skilled and compassionate Home Care and Hospice staff that we are blessed to have serving this region’s residents,” she said.
