Effingham, IL -(Effingham Radio)- Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders made headlines this week when he had two stents inserted after experiencing chest discomfort. Stents reduce the risk of a heart attack by keeping coronary arteries open for blood flow.
While his case is higher profile than most, blocked arteries are common.
“Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide,” said Jessica Prange, MD, a cardiologist with Prairie Heart Institute at HSHS St. Anthony’s Hospital in Effingham. “It claims more lives than all forms of cancer combined.”
Stents such as those Sanders received are one of several treatments available. Medication and bypass surgery are also options, depending on the severity of the blockage. Risk factors for cardiovascular disease include age, family history, smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
“Symptoms vary widely, and some heart disease goes undetected until a catastrophic event such as a heart attack or sudden death,” Prange said. “We encourage a heart-healthy diet, regular exercise and routine physicals as preventive measures.”
