Rockford, IL-(Effingham Radio)-A new law is affecting procedures in schools across Illinois.
Governor Pritzker signed the law in late August, which was sparked by the suicide of 16-year-old Corey Walgren in 2017.
Walgren died after he was questioned by a school resource officer about an alleged campus crime.
The law now requires that parents must be called before questioning of a student under 18 takes place, which didn’t happen in Walgren’s case.
If parents can’t be reached, the law allows school personnel such as a guidance counselor, social worker, nurse, or school psychologist to be present.
