MATTOON, IL-(Effingham Radio)- An arrest has been made in connection with a homicide that occurred overnight in Mattoon.
The following press release has been released by the Mattoon Police Department:
Mattoon police were dispatched to Sunrise Apartments, 1817 S. 9th, on Friday May 17th at approx. 1:10 a.m. in regards to an unknown disturbance.
Upon arrival officers located a man on the floor of an apartment adjacent to a sliding glass door.
The man had been wounded in the torso and was bleeding.
Officers rendered CPR.
The victim was transported to SBLHC where he was then pronounced dead from gunshot wounds.
The deceased was a 29 year old male from Mattoon.
The coroner will release his name at the appropriate time.
An investigation was conducted that led to the arrest of Keith McGrew III of Chicago.
The arrest occurred at 7:30 a.m. after McGrew was located on foot on the Lake Road, a few miles Southwest of Mattoon.
McGrew was taken into custody without incident.
McGrew indicated that he had just came to Mattoon from Chicago last Saturday, and that he was staying with a female at Sunrise Apartments.
McGrew became an acquaintance of the decedent over the past few days.
McGrew said he and the decedent quarreled during the early morning hours of May 17th, so he (McGrew) shot and killed the decedent.
McGrew was charged with 1st degree Murder and taken to the Coles County jail.
