In the first game of the season Effingham came out on the losing end of a 26-19 score against Breese Mater Dei. Mater Dei struck first and fast on their first drive of the game after receiving the opening kickoff capped off by a 4 yard TD run by RB Logan Ratermann, Breese would miss the extra point. Effingham then came back with an answer on the following drive with a 3 yard TD run by Logan Brown that tied the game at 6-6. The Hearts continued the momentum and took the lead mid way threw the 2nd quarter 12-6 on a 2 yard TD run by Kendall Ballman. Mater Dei would then score around 30 seconds left in the 1st half to tie the game at 12 on a 6 yard TD run by Ratermann.
Effingham would then stall out with their first 2nd half drive, The Knights would take advantage scoring on a 37 yard TD pass from Travis Jasper to Zach Napovanice to make it 18-12.. Then the moments that swung the game in Mater Dei’s favor for good. The Hearts would miss handle the in-sewing kickoff, but the Hearts defense held strong and didn’t allow Breese to score despite the good field possession. Travis Jasper proving that hes’s not just a offensive player intercepted a Landon Wolfe pass and took it back 27 yards to the house for a pick 6 and that made the score 26-12. Effingham would score one last TD a 55 yard pass from Wolfe to Tristin Duncan to pull within seven 26-19 but never getting any closer than that.
