Effingham, Il (Via St. Louis, MO) – When Brian Gerau opened his email last week at the Jackson (Mo.) Chamber of Commerce, he was met with a threatening email.
The sender told Gerau he had been hired to kill Gerau, but Gerau could save his life by sending him money through Bitcoin, a notoriously popular cryptocurrency.
Gerau, executive director of the Jackson Chamber, is the latest person to receive the email that appears to be circulating throughout the United States.
“I knew it was spam, but someone put a lot of thought and effort into it,” Gerau said.
“They were really polite for wanting to kill me.”
Better Business Bureau (BBB) suggests anyone who receives a similar email to contact their local police department.
