EFFINGHAM COUNTY: The proposed one-percent Effingham County Facilities Tax was defeated by 3,983 no votes against 2,853 yes votes. The referendum would have imposed a one-percent tax on certain items such as prepared food and soft drinks. Revenue from the tax would have been distributed to the five Effingham County school districts based on population and could have only been used for facility maintenance.
Also rejected was the County quarter-cent public safety tax. The revenue from that tax would be used to fund county infrastructure to free up funds for other uses, such as building the county’s savings. That measure was defeated by 4,957 no votes and 1,831 yes votes.
