The Cubs got on the board first with a Russell two run home run in the second. The Cardinals scored their first run in the sixth on a Moss solo home run. The Cardinals tied the game at 2 in the seventh on a Gyorko solo home run. The Cardinals added six runs in the eighth thanks to a wild pitch by Edwards, a bases loaded walk, and a Grichuk Grand Slam to give the Cardinals an 8-2 lead. The Cubs scored two runs in the ninth on a throwing error and a Báez RBI to make it 8-4.
Neither starting pitcher was a factor in the decision. Cardinals starter Weaver gave up 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 3 and walking 3 over 4 innings in his major league debut. Reyes got the win in relief. Cubs starter Hendricks gave up 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 12 over 7 innings. Edwards took the loss in relief.
