(Champaign, IL) — Even on Halloween, people in Illinois have little to fear from bats as their numbers continue to fall. Wildlife researchers with the Illinois Natural History Survey say the bat population in Illinois has fallen drastically, especially those varieties of bats who hibernate in caves. Groups that monitor bats and record their high-frequency vocalizations say bat numbers have been dropping in part because of a fungal disease that’s spread by humans and in part because of the spinning blades of wind energy turbines.
