The Cubs were able to score first after a Rizzo sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. The Cardinals came back with a Moss RBI single in the second to tie the game at 1. The Cardinals then scored three runs in the third thanks to a Carpenter solo home run and a Holliday two run home run to make it 4-1. The Cubs got a run back in the bottom of the third with a Heyward RBI double to make it 4-2. The Cubs got another run in the bottom of the fourth when Almora Jr. grounded into a double play to make it 4-3. The Cubs had a chance to score in the seventh with runners on the corners but Heyward grounded out to first to end the inning. The Cubs had runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth but a ground out by Szczur ended the game.
Wainwright got the win making him 6-4 on the season. Wainwright gave up 3 runs on 6 hits while striking out 4 and walking 3 over 6 and 2/3 innings. Rosenthal got his 14th save of the season. Hammel took the loss falling to 7-3 on the year. Hammel gave up 4 runs on 6 hits while striking out 3 and walking 1 over 5 and 2/3 innings.
