FEMA has denied the state’s request for federal flood relief assistance for about two dozen counties. In a letter to state officials, FEMA said the damage suffered by residents, businesses and municipalities from heavy rain earlier this year wasn’t beyond the capabilities of government and voluntary agencies to cope with. Illinois Emergency Management Agency Director James Joseph says he’ll ask the affected counties if there is other information that could be added to an appeal of FEMA’s decision.
