Donna J. Newton, a cherished soul and beloved matriarch, peacefully entered into eternal rest on February 11, 2026, at Shelbyville Manor.
Donna was born on July 1, 1951, in Shelbyville, the daughter of Cletis W. and Ruby (Miller) Hicks. Her heart found its match in Clifford R. Newton Sr., whom she married on March 17, 1974. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership, lasting 37 years until Clifford’s passing in 2011. Together, they raised a family rooted in warmth and affection, a legacy carried on by their two daughters, Patty Reynolds of Vandalia and Jenny Newton of Worden; their son, Clifford Jr of Moweaqua, and the blessings of 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren who filled Donna’s life with joy and laughter.
The bond of family extended to Donna’s siblings, who stood by her side throughout the journey of life, Shirley (Rod) Wells of Rochester, Lois (Bob) Bertulli of Tampa, Florida, Ruby (Matt) Bowyer of Jackson, Missouri, Pat Lamb of Shelbyville, and Dixie Hale of Mattoon; and her brothers, Randy (Carol) Hicks of Cowden, Job Hicks of Lakewood, Jesse (Sandy) Baker of Shelbyville, and Harold Scroggins of Mt. Vernon. They, alongside her children and grandchildren, carry forward the light of her spirit.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Brian Hicks, Tim McClain, Cletis O. Hicks and Cletis Michael “Mikey” Hicks.
A woman of faith and dedication, Donna served her community with passion and kindness, working for Shelby County Community Services for over two decades. Her commitment and care for those around her were unwavering, as was her devotion to her spiritual life.
Donna’s zest for life was evident in her hobbies and simple pleasures. She found joy in playing bingo, cards, and Yahtzee, and took comfort in the nostalgia of old television shows like “Little House on the Prairie” and “The Waltons.” Her most treasured pastime was spending time with her loved ones.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville, with Reverend Ronnie Brown officiating. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during visitation from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Following the ceremony, burial will take place in Oak Grove Cemetery in rural Cowden. Memorials in Donna’s honor may be made to Shelby County Community Services CDS and may be mailed to Lockart-Green Funeral Home, 302 W. Main St., Shelbyville, IL 62565.
