Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- During Monday’s meeting of the Effingham County Board’s Administrative Committee, members scrutinized the proposed Medical Aid in Dying law, debating whether to urge local healthcare providers to opt out. Board Chairman Josh Douthit pointed out that all local state legislators opposed the measure, reflecting community sentiment. Coroner Kim Rhodes shared that the Illinois Coroners Association is seeking clarity on how such a law would be carried out. Norbert Soltwedel noted supporters come from various backgrounds, suggesting it’s not solely a religious debate. The committee chose to revisit the topic in March.
Broader discussions covered an ordinance to improve subdivision upkeep, ongoing efforts to secure opioid treatment funding, updates for bereavement leave in the employee handbook, and volunteer-backed Extension programs. Additionally, a resident urged the board to take a firm stance against racism, an issue that may be addressed at the next county board meeting.
