Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Effingham City Council debated whether to grant tax funds to Wheat Penny after its “Miracle at Wheat Penny” event attracted considerable crowds and social media buzz. Commissioner Libby Moeller suggested a $5,000 hotel/motel tax grant, but the Tourism Advisory Board approved only a $1,000 contribution, which Wheat Penny declined.
Mayor Mike Schutzbach cautioned that giving grants to businesses could lead to a flood of similar requests, while Commissioner Hank Stephens argued that available funds should be invested in driving tourism. Wheat Penny co-owner Michael Brummer estimates 12,000 visitors attended the promotion. The council will revisit the proposal at their next meeting.
The Council also moved forward on multiple infrastructure and planning projects, including a new tree pruning contract, real estate acquisitions for right-of-way improvements, sewer and water main relocations, and a draft 2050 Comprehensive Plan set for upcoming review.
