
Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Public Safety Committee met Wednesday for their quarterly meeting and heard updates from the Sheriff’s Office, EMA, Coroner, and other county agencies.
Sheriff Kuhns reported that the jail population has levelled off, but also said there were more arrests last month that any other month this year. He said overall, the Sheriff’s office remains steady through this quarter.
Pam Jacobs with Effingham County EMA reported that lots of grants being sought by ECEMA are on hold due to the federal government shutdown. She said they are in a ‘wait and see’ approach until the government is reopened.
Coroner Kim Rhodes stated that the new morgue location is moving along as expected. She said the extra room will help surrounding areas in case they need extra space. ECHD’s Emergency Preparedness said they have conducted tests for West Nile virus in Effingham County mosquitos, but none have tested positive. They are still testing ticks for Lyme disease, and noted that back to school shots are continuing through the end of October.
Effingham K9 Search & Rescue units had K9 training this month, and the training caught the attention of residents. Kevin Bullard with K9 Search & Rescue said he will try to get out PSA’s to inform the public better when training events happen in the future.
And finally, Greg Koester with the County Highway Department reported that they are gearing up for winter, and are already buying salt to prepare for winter snowfalls.
