Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Effingham City Council has approved a key intergovernmental grant agreement with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to fund the westerly extension of Airport Road. The $3 million grant will enable the road’s extension from US Route 45, paving the way for new economic development in the area.
Effingham City Council members also voiced clear positions on three proposed taxes under discussion. Support was expressed for a 1% city sales tax, anticipated to generate over $6.5 million annually for infrastructure and potential property tax relief. Strong opposition surfaced regarding a possible grocery tax, with officials citing concerns about increased costs for residents. Additionally, there was consensus for eliminating the city’s amusement tax, a move that would reduce annual revenue by $165,000. As the grocery tax’s fate is tied to a state sunset at the end of 2025, council members seek resident feedback before final votes at the September 16 meeting.
In additional measures, council members established a truck route for the McGrath Avenue extension, a move tied to expansion efforts at Stevens Industries within the Effingham Business Park. During the session, businessman Mark Mayhood advocated for a proposed 1% city sales tax, urging inclusion of support for aging local schools in future revenue plans.
