Newton, IL-(Effingham Radio)-Â Jasper County health officials have detected the first West Nile virus-positive mosquito batch this year. The positive pool was collected on July 23. The testing has occurred since May.
Mosquito activity spikes during hot weather—especially at dawn and dusk. Protect yourself: wear long sleeves and pants outdoors, apply EPA-approved repellents, and eliminate standing water around your home. Illness is normally mild (fever, headaches, body aches), but those over 50 face higher risks that could include meningitis, encephalitis, and possible lingering side effects.
