On Friday night the Altamont Indians opened the season with an impressive showing on the defense end, holding Nokomis to no field goals in the first quarter. Altamont rode that defensive effort to an impressive 46-27 win over the Redskins on opening night of the 2023-24 season.
With both teams replacing seniors that graduated and Nokomis dealing with a couple of injuries, it was Altamont getting off to a great start on both ends. Nokomis had a tough time even getting the ball across half court and Altamont would take advantage with tips and steals. Aden McManaway came out with intense defense and did just about everything in the game. McManaway started out with four points, Dillan Elam got off to a solid start with four in the quarter as well. The only points that Nokomis were able to score was a point from the free throw line by Saint Newman and Altamont held the 14-1 lead after a quarter.
The three ball would start to fall for the Indians in the second, as Alec Jahraus and Eli Miller knocked down threes. Nokomis finally got some offense going by Reece Lohman. Lohamn coming off the bench scored four in the quarter. The Redskins were able to get into double figures but still trailed by 16, 26-10 at the half.
The three ball continued to fall to start the second half. Jahraus made three from beyond the arc in the quarter. “KD” Kaden Davis knocked down a three as well and Kaidyn Miller had six in the quarter. The Indians would continue to hold Nokomis to single digit quarter for the entire game. Altamont lead grew to 25 to lead 44-19 after three.
The action would slow down in the fourth but Altamont had built a big enough lead that the low point total in the final quarter didn’t matter.
Altamont picks up the season opening win and will be back in action on Tuesday traveling to Cumberland
Nokomis falls to 0-2 on the season.
