Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Unit 40 school board members convened Monday to discuss significant shifts in district programming and finances, following a report from Superintendent Andy Johnson focused on recent funding reductions. Johnson explained that the district has lost funding for the 21st Century program, which has played a vital role in providing after-school activities during the academic year and summer school opportunities. With the funding unavailable, Johnson stressed, “we can’t operate the program,” though he remains optimistic the grants could return. He said that multiple states are suing the federal government right now over the lack of funds being dispersed that were allocated and promised. He urged board members to prepare for swift hiring if funding is reinstated.
The district’s school magazine, “The Torch,” has also been discontinued due to budget cuts, with about a third of essential grant funding eliminated.
In addition, Johnson addressed planned improvements to South Side School, revealing that most projects were halted last month. With resources tight, remaining upgrades will be postponed until confirmation that mobile classrooms are ready in time for the upcoming school year, ensuring student needs are prioritized.
Kay Pemberton introduced “Love the Ham,” a new program connecting community volunteer needs with eager student participants, strengthening ties between students and local service opportunities. The board took time to honor recent achievements, commending the high school girls track team and the bass fishing squad for successful state-level performances.
Other business included the approval of a two-year lease with Tri-Bar Investments for the Little Hearts Early Childhood Center, which will remain self-funded and not use tax dollars, at a cost of $3,125 per month. Despite the lease renewal, tuition rates will not change for families.
