On Friday night Effingham made the long trek north to Lincoln, possible for the final time in football and the long trip results in big shut out win 47-0.
Lincoln connected on a long pass play on their first series only for the drive to stall out and have to punt. That would be the story of the night for the Railers, taking one step forward and two steps back. Effingham would capitalize and drive down the field in ten plays, finished off by a 24 yard run by Weldon Dunston. That would not be the final score for Effingham or Dunston on the night. Hearts would score again taking advantage of a short field, finished off by Dunston second score of the night to make it 14-0 after the opening quarter.
A series of events that could have swung momentum in Lincoln favor early in the second quarter. Hearts were driving on another scoring drive however, Kaden Koeberlein caught a pass from Tanner Pontious and ran for first down. However he would fumble the ball and Lincoln would recover inside the ten yard line. The Railers however on their sixth play of their drive would fumble on an attempted reverse and was recovered by Josh Kelley. Hearts would get into the end zone just three plays later with an 11 yard strike from Pontious to Connor Thompson to make the score 21-0. Effingham would get one more score in the half on Pontious second TD of the night. This time a short three yard TD to Colton Loy. Hearts would have the lead 27-0 at the half.
In the second half Effingham would continue to pour it on and Dunston would get into the end zone two more times, to make four for him on the night. The last score would come late in the fourth quarter with Effingham special teams unit blocking another punt. This time blocking it and recovering it into the end zone was Logan Heil.
Effingham improves to 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the Apollo Conference. Hearts return home for senior night next week against Breese Mater Dei who also is 4-3 on the season. Lincoln drops to 3-4 on the season and hosts Taylorville next week.
