With only six games on the “weird” season that we found ourselves in the state of Illinois, the goal for the Effingham Hearts WIN THE APOLLO CONFERENCE. A feat that a ton of players on the team accomplished on the basketball court this season. And well after Friday nights 34-21 victory over Mt. Zion. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!
After a punt to begin the game for Mt. Zion, Effingham got on the board first with a 16 yard air strike from Nate Thompson to Tristian Duncan. Duncan made a one handed circus catch to put the Hearts up 7-0.
The Braves responded quickly to say the least, a one play 65 yard pass from Aston Summers to Christian Keyeha, to tie the game at 7. Mt. Zion would put up one more score just before the quarter ended, as Brave defender Frank Tyrolt picked off a busted play and took it 44 yards back to the house to put Mt. Zion ahead 14-7.
Effingham would then go on to score 27 unanswered points from that point on. Effingham would score twice in the second period on a pair of short yard TD runs from Chase Woomer and Jacob Stoneburner. Effingham would take the lead at halftime 20-14. Mt. Zion would not do themselves any favors being penalized four times at crucial times for 44 yards.
The Hearts would begin the third quarter on a 9 minute 4 second drive that ended in a 4 yard touchdown run from Trevor Donsbach. Effingham would make big 4th down stop on defense, then drove the ball down the field killing a ton of time off the fourth quarter clock. That drive ended up having Stoneburner punching it in from two yards out for his second rushing touchdown of the night.
Mt. Zion would score one last time as Summers connected with London and he would slip a Heart tackle to get in the end zone to make the scoreboard look a little closer. The final ended up being 34-21.
Effingham improves to 4-0 on the season and Mt. Zion falls to 3-1 on the season.
Effingham closes the season off next week on the road at Lincoln.
