EFFINGHAM, IL-(Effingham Radio)- C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corporation recently showcased their 53rd year of accomplishments demonstrating the fact that community action helps people and changes lives. During the 2018 annual meeting, some very special people were recognized that had overcome obstacles in obtaining or maintaining self-sufficiency. According to C.E.F.S. Chief Executive Officer Kevin Bushur, “This past year our programs and services truly made a real difference in the lives of residents of the community.”
Gene and Jeannie Mayhood have been receiving home-delivered meals for the past several years, as they want to remain in their own home for as long as possible. The Meals on Wheels of C.E.F.S. Program has played a vital role in making that possible. The Mayhoods appreciate the service and credit the program for giving them the ability to stay independent and in their own home, which is what the Meals on Wheels of C.E.F.S. home-delivered meal program is all about, helping to keep people in their own home by providing a hot, nutritious meal and a daily check by a volunteer. Gene looks forward to seeing a volunteer each day and always has a joke to tell, which puts a smile on everyone’s face.
The Meals on Wheels of C.E.F.S. provides nutritionally balanced meals on a donation basis to people who are 60 years of age and older and their spouses. There are no income guidelines or any restrictions besides the age limit. Educational, informational and social activities are available in addition to nutrition. Meals are served on a reservation basis. Meals on Wheels of C.E.F.S. operates eighteen sites in the five counties of Clay, Effingham, Fayette, Christian and Montgomery. The program is funded through the Administration on Aging including Title III funding through the Area Agencies on Aging (Midland Area Agency on Aging), local United Way agencies and participant contributions. There are two components to our Meals on Wheels of C.E.F.S.: congregate meals where seniors share a nutritious meal and enjoy activities and fellowship at a nutrition site and home delivered meals where meals are delivered to homebound seniors. A nutritious meal along with a daily check are benefits of home delivered meals.
