EFFINGHAM, IL-(Effingham Radio)- One person was killed in an accident that occurred north of Effingham on Saturday.
According to a report from the Illinois State Police, the accident occurred on I-57 southbound near milepost 167 at 1:35am.
The report states that a vehicle driven by 40 year old, Marchelle M Collins, of Chicago was traveling on I-57 southbound at a slower rate of speed in the right lane due to having a spare tire on the vehicle.
A semi driven by 41 year old, Terrell Ross, of Hopkins, South Carolina came up from behind the Collins vehicle.
Ross struck the rear of the Collins vehicle causing heavy damage to both vehicles.
The Collins vehicle then went into the median and came to a rest.
The Ross vehicle came to a rest on the right shoulder.
Passengers in the Collins vehicle sustained injuries.
39 year old, Olivia M Collins, of Chicago, 57 year old, William Mae Butler, of Chicago, and an 11 year old juvenile from Chicago were taken to HSHS St Anthony’s Memorial Hospital for treatment.
18 year old, Michael M Anderson, of Chicago was taken to Carle Hospital by ambulance.
A nine year old juvenile from Chicago and 74 year old, Mary J Gates, from Calumet City were airlifted to Carle Hospital.
Gates later succumbed to her injuries.
Ross was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
