SHELBY COUNTY, IL-(Effingham Radio)- An Effingham man was killed in an accident that took place in Shelby County on Friday.
According to a report from the Illinois State Police, the accident occurred on Route 16, approximately .26 miles west of Shelby County Road 1400E, at 5:08pm.
The report states that a vehicle driven by a 28 year old male. of Effingham was traveling westbound on Route 16.
The male then began to pass a slower moving vehicle, but observed a vehicle heading eastbound.
The male then slowed down and moved back into the westbound lanes.
However, the vehicle behind driven by a 37 year old female, of Tower Hill was unable to stop before rear-ending the male’s vehicle.
The collison caused the male to lose control of the vehicle and it crossed into the south ditch, rolling several times before coming to a rest.
The male was airlifted to an area hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
His passenger, a 44 year old male from Effingham, was also airlifted to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The female was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
