The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Vandalia Police, and St. Elmo Police were all involved in a police chase on Friday afternoon that ended on the east side of Brownstown on U.S. Route 40. Fayette County Sheriff Chris Smith says the pursuit was by St. Elmo Police, Vandalia Police and the Sheriff and started in Brownstown, went to St. Elmo and then back to Brownstown–where it ended at the east end of Brownstown. Sheriff Smith says two squad cars received damage–his vehicle and St. Elmo PD’s. And, Sheriff Smith says he and the St. Elmo Officer both went to Fayette County Hospital for treatment and were released. U.S. Route 40, just east of Brownstown, was closed for several hours after the incident as the investigation continues. The Illinois State Police is handling the investigation. But, as of this time, they have not released any further details.
