A teen was killed in a crash involving a train early Friday morning in Humboldt.
Mattoon CUSD #2 Superintendent, Larry Lilly, confirmed that John Nisbet III, a Mattoon High School student lost his life in the crash in a statement posted to the District’s Facebook Page.
Lilly stated, “We send our sympathies, support and prayers to the family and friends of John Nisbet III. Our school family has experienced this loss as well. We are all hurting.” He added, “Anyone else involved in the incident as well as first-responders are also in our thoughts.”
The Facebook post stated that Nisbet passed away after the vehicle that he was in was struck by a train at a crossing in Humboldt. Nisbet was an honor student, played JV tennis, and was on the chess team.
The post added that the High School will arrange for clergy, counselors, and social workers for students and staff to speak and seek comfort from during the difficult time.
“As we have done in the past, our school district stands ready to help our students, staff and families in their time of need,” stated Lilly.
We reached out to the Coles County Sheriff’s Department, but no additional details about the accident is available at this time. We will continue to update this story as details become available.
