Effingham, Ill. (Springfield, Ill.) – The plan to raise Illinois’ smoking age to 21 is moving forward at the Illinois Capitol. Both House and Senate panels yesterday approved the idea.
Advocates say by raising the smoking age, many teens and young people won’t start to smoke.
But critics, including many of Illinois business groups, are worried about the 200 dollar fine that is included in the plan for anyone caught selling cigarettes to people under 21.
