Effingham, Il – This past week the Effingham City Council decided to vote on the new business district set to be created on the south side of the city.
The results of the vote were 4-1 however according to the Effingham Daily News (EDN), there was some opposition from local business owners in the district including Danny Sheffield, who owns Bob’s Discount.
The business district located near South Banker is about 130 acres, with 60 businesses within the district.
EDN shared, “The district comes after much of the South Banker area was deemed blighted in an eligibility study presented to the council in September.”
“The district will operate with a budget of $27.5 million over the course of its 23-year life span by using, in part, revenue generated from the additional 1 percent sales tax levied across the district.”
There will be a public hearing on the issue right before the next city council meeting.
The meeting will be on Tuesday December 19, 5:30 p.m. with City Council voting on the final decision in their regular meeting held immediately after
