(Washington, DC) — Most of the supporters of a new plan to save pensions for retired coal miners are from West Virginia. That state’s two U.S. Senators yesterday endorsed a plan to use abandoned mine money as well as federal loans to prop-up the nearly bankrupt United Mine Workers’ pension plan. Congress stepped in earlier this year to prop-up the union’s failing healthcare fund. Not a single member of Illinois’ congressional delegation has signed on to the pension bailout yet.
