The National Weather Service in Lincoln is expecting high heat indices this week, with the Wednesday being the warmest day. They are predicting indices to reach 100-105 degrees over many portions of Central Illinois. These heat indices were predicted for shaded areas. In areas of direct sunlight, add an additional 15 degrees.
The National Weather Service is encouraging everyone to take the following precautions when dealing with the heat this week.
- Drink plenty of water
- Reduce strenuous activities, or keep them limited to early morning or late in the day
- Check on elderly family, friends, neighbors
- Spend time indoors with an air conditioner
- Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles
We also spoke with the Effingham County Animal Shelter regarding outdoor pets. They urged owners to ensure that pets have plenty of food, water, shelter, and shade.
