(Springfield, IL) — Illinois Senate rivals will square off tonight during a debate in the state’s capital. Republican incumbent Mark Kirk is trying to revamp his coalition, which is made up of suburban Chicago independents that have helped him win in the past. The 7 p.m. debate in Springfield comes at a time when Kirk is increasing his attacks on challenger Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth’s tenure as head of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs. Polls show her ahead in the Senate race and Kirk still in the running.
