(Chicago, IL) — Two downstate Illinois senators want to ban the directors of state agencies from taking part in political campaigns. Democrat Andy Manar and Republican Sam McCann say they were surprised that it wasn’t already against the law for department heads and other state executives to appear in campaign ads and literature. Manar calls it a gaping loophole that the law allows executives with licensing and regulatory power to campaign for or against candidates. Manar and McCann’s bill would bar electioneering by these high level employees, though not their private support or donation to a candidate.
