The following are EIU sports results:
VOLLEYBALL
The Eastern Illinois volleyball team had a quick turnaround following their Friday night match against Austin Peay as the Panthers hosted Murray State Saturday afternoon. The Panthers battled close with one of the top teams in the Ohio Valley Conference, but were defeated by Murray State in three sets (20-25, 18-25, 18-25). Eastern Illinois now stands at 4-17 on the season and 1-5 in OVC matches. The Panthers will prepare for a pair of conference matches next weekend (Oct. 14-15) as they host Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State in Lantz Arena.
MEN’S SOCCER
The Eastern Illinois men’s soccer team fell to Summit League opponent Omaha 2-0 Saturday afternoon following two first period goals from the Mavericks. The loss drops the Panthers to 2-9-1 overall and 0-3-0 in conference play while Omaha remains perfect in the Summit League with a 2-0-0 conference record and a 5-4-3 overall record.
EIU continues the season on the road this coming Tuesday (Oct. 11) heading to DeKalb to face Northern Illinois at 7 p.m.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Eastern Illinois lost a tough Ohio Valley Conference road match on Sunday afternoon as the lone goal of the match was an own goal in the 48th minute during a 1-0 Morehead State victory.
The own goal came after Cara Maher fired a shot into the goal box that was blocked. In the attempt to clear the ball an own goal was scored.
EIU fell to 4-9 overall, 1-4 in the OVC. All five conference matches this season have been decided by a 1-0 score. Morehead State improved to 4-9-2, 1-4-1 in the OVC.
FOOTBALL
For the second straight year the Eastern Illinois and Tennessee State football game came down to one play to end the contest and for the second straight year Eastern Illinois secondary made that play as the No. 19 ranked Panthers held on for a 35-34 win over No. 25 Tennessee State.
Last season Jourdan Wickliffe picked off a pass in overtime to hand the Panthers a three point win. On Saturday night Nick Horne knocked down a last effort pass from near midfield to improve EIU’s record to 4-2 overall, 2-1 in the OVC. TSU suffered its first loss of the season falling to 4-1, 1-1 in the OVC.
